BLEPHAROPLASTY

(EYELID SURGERY)

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a procedure in which excess skin and fat bags are removed from the eyelids in order to obtain a fresher and more youthful look. Remember that it must be performed by a certified Plastic Surgeon.

When a person looks tired and aged due to drooping eyelids and bags under the eyes, it is possible to have what we call blepharoplasty. Blepharoplasty consists of removing fat, excess skin, and muscles from the upper and lower eyelids.

In addition to improving the patient's appearance, in many cases it is necessary to do this surgery because drooping eyelids can interfere with vision.

It is important to clarify that blepharoplasty does not eliminate "crow's feet", other wrinkles or the drooping of the eyebrows. It can be performed in isolation or together with other cosmetic surgeries of the face, such as the cervicofacial lift or the frontal lift.

Surgery

Blepharoplasty is an outpatient intervention, that is, the patient returns home after a few hours. It is performed in the operating room, under local anesthesia plus sedation, although there are cases in which general anesthesia might be preferred.

If performed under local anesthesia plus sedation, the patient feels relaxed and the eyelids are numb to pain. With general anesthesia the patient is asleep during the operation.

The intervention usually lasts between one and three hours. When doing all four lids, you usually start with the upper ones. Most of the time the incisions are placed in the natural lines of the upper eyelids and just below the lashes in the lower ones; in some cases they can spread to the crow's feet. Through these incisions the skin is separated from the underlying fat and muscle, removing excess fat and, occasionally, excess skin and muscle. The incisions are closed with very fine sutures.

In young patients with only excess fat, a transconjunctival blepharoplasty of the lower eyelids can be performed; the incision is placed inside the lower eyelid, thanks to which it does not leave a visible scar.
